The field of obstetrics deals with pregnancy and pregnancy associated conditions and complications. Antenatal care involves having regular routine check-up with your doctor to ensure wellbeing of the pregnant mother and foetus in order to have an uneventful delivery. Your doctor will conduct a physical examination in each visit and advise appropriate tests as and when required.

Normal delivery is the process in which a woman gives birth naturally via vaginal route. At times your doctor will perform an episiotomy (that involves placing strategic cuts over the perineum of the mother to enlarge the birth canal) to facilitate delivery and prevent complications.

Sometimes prolonged labour might require assistance to speed up the process in order to reduce maternal fatigue and foetal distress (rising heart rate and possible brain damage to the baby). This uses techniques like forceps delivery and vacuum assisted delivery.

Caesarean section is a surgical procedure that involves removal of the baby from the mother’s womb by opening the abdomen and uterus. This procedure requires anaesthesia. Your doctor may advise you an elective surgery if your pregnancy has complications. An emergency surgery may be needed in some patients who present in labour to reduce the complications to mother and baby.
